Megan Kelly

Name: Megan Kelly

Major: Women's and Gender Studies and Psychology

Graduation date: Spring 2017

Plans after graduation:
Continue onto grad school in a PhD counseling program and earn a WGS certificate. Using these, I hope to work as a counselor in a clinic and look into private practice.

Why did you choose to major/minor in WGS:
I first became interested in WGS during the Spring of my Freshman year at the university. I decided to pursue it as a minor because I felt it would help my be a better counselor. It wasn't until recently that I decided to make it my second major. As an intern at the WGS department, I have a deeper appreciation for all the work the faculty does, and I feel like it would be worth the extra time to major in WGS as well.

What do you like about majoring/minoring in WGS:
It's such a broad topic that the material and experience is always changing, and a lot of the information overlaps with my studies in Psych and beliefs about social roles/relations/etc.

Why is WGS important to you:
Not only does it cover topics that I am passionate about and have personal connections to, but it makes me hopeful of the future. Women have fought many battles for their rights up to now, and there are many more to go. WGS is the first - and maybe most important - step in winning those battles that will benefit everyone. I believe it's necessary in order to reverse social inequalities.
