Caroline Bennett

Name: Caroline Bennett

Major: Human Relations

Minor: Social Justice

Graduation date: Spring 2016

Plans after Graduation:
As a first-generation college student from Tulsa, Oklahoma I will graduate from the University of Oklahoma loan and debt free, with honors. Academic goals after graduation are to attend The Ohio State University, where I have been accepted into the fully-funded, Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Master's program as a Diversity Enrichment Fellow. I will continue my research as it regards to Black Feminism, Hip-Hop Feminism, and Black girlhood, specifically the ways in which urban girls engage in art through a Hip-Hop perspective to express trauma, explore healing, and reject stereotypes. Long-term goals will include transitioning from a Master's to a Ph.D. program. The ultimate goal after completing education at the graduate level is to charter a school in my hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma modeled after, SeeWorth Academy, SOLHOT, and Urban Prep, and Ron Clark Academy. Professionally, I will continue my career as a world-traveling Inspirational speaker under my trending name of #CarolineInspires.

Why did you choose to major in WGS:
The reason I chose to minor in Social Justice was so that I would be allowed the flexibility, opportunity and experience to be able to "practice what I preach".

What do you like about majoring in WGS:
The greatest part about minoring in Social Justice is that as students we are pushed to complete an internship that will hopefully prepare us for a career in the future. But the greatest part about the internship is that the focus is not on the writing, it's more on the reflection portion which is very important when working in the social justice field.

Why is WGS important to you:
WGS is important to me because it is the only minor outside of Human relations and African American studies that has the potential to be inclusive of my experiences not only as a woman but as a Black woman.
