Amanda Barker

Name: Amanda Barker

Major: Women's and Gender Studies and Psychology

Graduation date: Spring 2016

Plans after Graduation:
Graduate school. Hopefully I will eventually go onto get my PhD. The dream is to start a non-profit with an emphasis on prevention, awareness and treatment of eating disorders.

Why did you choose to major in WGS:
One day I realized that eating disorder issues are/were more prevalent than I had ever expected, and I then realized that regardless of this fact, basically no one was talking about it. So, I was inspired to change the way we view and understand eating disorders and the individuals it impacts.

What do you like about majoring in WGS:
This major is less about women and more about people seeking to understand themselves, others and their relationship with others. I really live how the majority of people from the major have a cause that they are extremely involved in - it gives this degree a real sense of importance.

Why is WGS important to you:
To me, WGS is about teaching others and yourself about the things, causes, and events that people find important. It is about awareness - making sure that the next generation had all the tools they need to live life to its fullest.
